Tsavorite Garnet: average retail prices, Apr 2024

Tsavorite Garnet is the market name of the green variety of the gemstone grossular garnet. It was first discovered in Tanzania in 1967; Tsavorite deposits were later found near the Tsavo national park in Kenya, after which this gemstone was named.

Tsavorite garnet's color is similar to emerald, while having fewer inclusions and imperfections. Its clarity, quality and hardness (7 to 7.5 on Mohs scale) make it perfect for different kinds of jewelry, such as rings, pendants, necklaces, and more.

Smaller pieces (of less than one carat) are relatively common, while bigger ones are quite rare, which means that tsavorite garnet's value per carat weight increases proportionally with its size. Color is another defining factor of tsavorite garnet's price - gemstones that have a pronounced vivid green color and resemble emerald are highly valued; these are typically more expensive than lighter specimens with a less impressive color.

Tsavorite garnet is one of the gems that aren't subject to treatments or enhancements, which makes it particularly valuable for collectors interested in natural gemstones.

Tsavorite is, to date, found almost exclusively in Tanzania and Kenya. Deposits of tsavorite garnet were also discovered in Madagascar in the early 90s.
