Axinite is a borosilicate mineral group that has a few varieties: ferroaxinite, magnesioaxinite and manganaxinite. Axinite is a rare mineral whose color varies from purple to brown or gray, and makes an elegant addition to any mineral collection.

It can also be cut and used in jewelry - its hardness makes it resistant to scratching, although it could break if it receives a strong blow.

Although it's usually not perfectly clear, axinite's value remains rather high, because of its rarity. Clarity is, of course, a factor when estimating axinite's price, together with its color and carat weight. Cut is another factor that is analyzed in axinite's value chart (available to registered users). Axinite gemstones that are clear are very rarely 5 cts or more in weight, and axinite exemplars of 10 cts are extremely rare.

It's found in some Alpine regions of France, as well as in the States and Sri Lanka, among other countries.
